Shomyo and Hannoki Falls

Shomyo Falls, Japan’s tallest waterfall, boasts an impressive drop of 350 meters—even taller than Tokyo Tower. This natural wonder consists of four cascading tiers: 70m, 58m, 96m, and 126m, each contributing to its breathtaking grandeur. During peak water flow, the falls discharge over 100 tons of water per second, creating a stunning spectacle. Shomyo Falls has been designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument, and it proudly features on the list of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls.

Adding to the marvel is Hannoki Falls, a seasonal phenomenon that appears alongside Shomyo Falls during the snowmelt season or after heavy rainfall. With an extraordinary height of 500 meters, Hannoki Falls surpasses Shomyo Falls in scale. Together, these waterfalls form a striking V-shape as they plunge into the same massive basin, 60 meters in diameter.

The waterfalls are inaccessible during the winter season, from mid-November to late April.
